COMPANY HISTORY

Cruse Technologies represents the latest chapter in a scanner business whose roots go back to 1979. The original company was established in Rheinbach, Germany by Hermann Albert Cruse and Diplom-Ingenieur KarlErnst Peters. Together, they laid the foundations for a specialist manufacturer focused on capturing large-format originals at high quality. Their work created the basis for what later became Cruse Spezialmaschinen.

From the outset, the company concentrated on demanding scanning and digital imaging rather than commodity office equipment. Over time, Cruse developed specialist flatbed scanners for very large originals. The company also offered a solution for customers who needed image capture at a far higher technical level than standard flatbed or camera-based systems could offer. This focus helped establish the Cruse name as a reference point for high-end, large-format digitisation in both industrial and cultural environments.

CRUSE DEVELOPMENT

As the business developed, Cruse became particularly well known wherever exact reproduction mattered. The company focused on high-end scanning in both 2D and 3D. This focus served markets including décor and ceramics as well as archives, museums and art reproduction. This breadth is one of the defining strengths of the Cruse story. It shows that the technology was built not for one niche, but for any application where colour, detail and structure must be preserved with unusual accuracy.

This dual role in industry and culture became central to the company’s identity. In industrial markets, Cruse scanners have been used to digitise wood, stone, ceramics and other textured surfaces for décor and surface-design applications. In cultural and specialist imaging environments, the same technical principles support the capture of artworks, archival materials and oversized originals. This is the case where non-contact handling, carefully controlled lighting and colour fidelity are essential. Cruse has thus developed a distinctive position at the intersection of imaging technology, material reproduction and high-value print workflows.

COMBINED LEADERSHIP

KarlErnst Peters played a key technical role in the origins of the Cruse scanner business. As co-founder and ‘Technical Originator’, he helped define the engineering concept behind the first Cruse systems. Later, Hermann Albert Cruse took over as Managing Director. Together, they combined technical innovation and entrepreneurial leadership in shaping the company’s early direction.

SPECIALIST MANUFACTURING

The company later operated from Wachtberg near Bonn, Germany, where Cruse Spezialmaschinen became the recognised corporate form of the scanner business. By this stage, the company was firmly established as a specialist manufacturer rather than a general imaging supplier.  Cruse produced premium scanners for very large originals and demanding applications. The company built its market position on precision, reliability and the ability to solve difficult capture challenges.

NEXT STEPS

The next major turning point came in 2022. At that time, Cruse Spezialmaschinen underwent a restructuring and asset-transfer process. Crucially, the scanner business itself did not disappear. Former senior employees founded Cruse Technologies. They took over the remaining assets of the former company in order to continue the business. The established core team from service, software, camera and lighting development remained central to the new structure.

This transition is significant. It was driven from within by people who already understood the products, customers and technical foundations of the business. This team holds a significant share in the new structure. Cruse Technologies is therefore not simply a successor in name, but a continuation of accumulated know-how inside the organisation.

The new business was placed under the leadership of Martin Paffrath, CEO of Cruse Technologies. This reinforced technical and strategic continuity between the former company and the present. Communication around the Decorative Surfaces Conference 2022 in Leipzig, Germany, showed that the reorganised business was already presenting a new scanner generation and lighting technology to the market. Thus indicating that development activity continued even during the transition.

BROADENING WORKFLOW

Today, Cruse Technologies continues to operate from Wachtberg and remains associated with advanced scanning solutions for demanding applications. Descriptions of the company emphasise high-end capture, large-format originals and strong relevance for décor, museums, archives and reproduction work. Software and workflow developments show how Cruse has expanded beyond simple image capture towards richer data generation. These include gloss, depth, 3D surface information and exports for downstream digital-print and third-party workflows.

This broader workflow relevance is particularly important for a digital-print readership. In décor and surface applications, the value of a scan lies not only in reproducing an image, but in capturing the colour, texture and structure that give a surface its realism. Cruse’s materials highlight capabilities such as photometric stereo, virtual relighting, physically based rendering (PBR)-related data capture and export options for downstream systems. All of these materials position the scanner not as an isolated device, but as the starting point for increasingly sophisticated production and design workflows.

CONCLUSION

The most compelling aspect of this history is continuity. The story begins with Hermann A Cruse and KarlErnst Peters. It extends through decades of specialist scanner development in Wachtberg and reaches the present day. Currently, in the form of Cruse Technologies, carried forward by people from inside the organisation who chose to preserve its products, know-how and customer relationships. At the same time, the Cruse story is increasingly forward looking. High-end scan data with exact colour, fine detail and precise surface structure is becoming more important in AI-driven design and imaging workflows. In that sense, Cruse Technologies is not only preserving a legacy in specialist scanning, but future-proofing it for the next generation of digital print and surface technologies.

PART TWO

Part Two of this article, will move from history into practice, highlighting how leading specialists are using Cruse technology today. Christian Dotzauer (CD Design) and Erin Hanson will be featured. Hanson is a contemporary impressionist artist renowned for her large, vibrant landscape paintings. 
Her work is recognised both for pushing the boundaries of digital surface and décor workflows. Dotzauer and Hanson integrate Cruse scanners into their processes in distinct ways. These range from capturing complex materials for high-end design work to generating detailed data for advanced visual and tactile applications. Together, their stories will show how Cruse scanning underpins innovative, real-world projects in specialist printing and surface design.
