Expecting a label press, installed today, to compete effectively in 2032 is not realistic. In this case, the owner would need to process recyclable packaging structures, thinner heat-sensitive films, pharmaceutical labels, low-migration applications or high-speed industrial products. These would not have been part of the original specification. Energy costs may be higher, experienced operators harder to recruit and customers more demanding in their requests for documented process stability and compliance.

CURING CONUNDRUM
Modern label presses control register, web tension, colour, inspection, waste and job data with remarkable precision. However, UV curing often remains outside this automated environment.
Most presses know whether register, tension, colour and inspection are within tolerance. However, they usually do not know whether curing is inside the correct process window. Therefore, one of the most critical quality parameters is still managed largely by assumption.
Too little energy risks insufficient cure and migration can impair materials. Furthermore, too much energy wastes power, raises heat and can cause the same problems. The objective is not to maximise output, but the right amount for a specific job.
Curing still depends on fixed recipes, broad safety margins and operator experience. This is no longer sufficient for shorter runs, more materials and tighter quality requirements. REGULATION COMPLIANCE
The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation will influence packaging design, recyclability, material selection and documentation. Migration requirements will remain critical for food, pharmaceutical and other sensitive applications. Customers will expect measurable evidence that production is controlled and repeatable. The Cyber Resilience Act adds cybersecurity, life-cycle responsibility, secure communication and maintenance capability to machine compliance.
Many curing systems in the market were designed before these requirements existed. A more powerful lamp, a modified housing or another cooling unit does not create a future-ready platform. Connectivity, transparency, security and adaptability must be part of the architecture from the beginning. It should not be added later as isolated accessories.
For converters, the risk is commercial restriction. A system that cannot provide process data, integrate securely or adapt to new applications, may limit jobs accepted during the lifetime of the press. For OEMs, a platform that cannot accommodate evolving curing, documentation and compliance requirements will demand more variants, engineering effort and costly redesign.

No single curing technology will cover every future application. Some jobs suit LED UV. Others require conventional UV, infrared, hot air, Excimer or combined processes. CONCLUSION
The coming years will bring new materials, chemistries, energy constraints, regulatory obligations and customer expectations. No one can predict every future requirement and the rules will continue to change. But OEMs and converters can choose systems that keep options open, reduce technical risk and protect the commercial value of the machine.
